to develop their first fundraising strategy

Described as being the “Storehouse of Essex history”, Essex Record Office’s work actually goes far beyond merely storing the county’s records. A programme of exhibitions and events, ongoing research and conservation work and a varied education programme all help to bring Essex’s history to life.

What was the Challenge?

A lot of Essex Record Office’s work is provided by the local authority as a statutory service. However, the Record Office also delivers a huge programme of work that far exceeds their statutory requirements. This work is vital for making Essex’s history available to everybody, whenever they want. However, this work is at threat as the service continues to respond to local authority funding cuts.

Having secured a grant through the SHARED Enterprise programme, Essex Record Office were keen to explore whether there was any potential to fundraise for their work.

How did Apollo Fundraising help?

Apollo Fundraising provided mentoring to the staff at Essex Record Office to help them develop their first fundraising strategy. As part of this, we ran a workshop with staff from across the organisation to uncover the stories that help show why their work is important and why potential supporters should care. The outcomes from this session helped to inspire Essex Records Office’s Case for Support.

We also ran an “Introduction to Fundraising” training session for staff and senior managers across the service. This helped staff to see what the potential for fundraising might be, and what opportunities and challenges existed within the current local authority setting.
